چکیده

Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) procedures can be effective at reducing aircraft noise in the vicinity of airports. The human factors implications for the air traffic controller of transitioning from conventional to CDA procedures are addressed in this paper. Different types of CDA procedures are introduced and models are developed of the controller tasks undertaken during current approach operations. The models are used to perform cognitive difference analyses to highlight the implications of using CDA procedures, particularly with respect to differences in intent, controllability and structure-based abstractions in the lateral, vertical and speed domains. An experiment is presented which probes the cognitive implications of changing speed profiles during the approach, which was one of the key differences between the procedures identified in the cognitive difference analysis. Based on the results, recommendations are made for CDA procedure design with a view to easing transition and controller acceptance.

Real-Time Trajectory Optimization and Air Traffic Control Simulation for Noise Abatement Approach Procedures

Aircraft noise is a major obstacle to the growth of aviation. This thesis presents an adaptive onboard real-time optimization algorithm and an Air Traffic Control simulation model that can minimize the aircraft approach noise and meet air traffic control targets and restrictions. The adaptive real-time optimization algorithm uses dynamic programming, nonlinear optimization, and receding horizon...

Design of Aircraft Noise Abatement Approach Procedures for Near-Term Implementation

Advanced aircraft noise abatement approach procedures -characterized by decelerating, continuous descent approaches using idle thrust, and enabled by flight guidance technologies such as GPS and FMS -have been shown to reduce operational aircraft noise on communities surrounding airports. However, implementation in the near future presents two challenges. The first is to mitigate the adverse ef...

Evaluation of Fuel Benefits Depending on Continuous Descent Approach Procedures

In this work arrival traffic following a continuous descent approach profile into the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was simulated based on actual recorded traffic data. The fuel burn for the simulated traffic was estimated using the Base of Aircraft Data (BADA) Thrust Specific Fuel Consumption model and compared to a baseline simulation of the as-flown trajectories, where the...

Traffic Signal Prediction Using Elman Neural Network and Particle Swarm Optimization

Prediction of traffic is very crucial for its management. Because of human involvement in the generation of this phenomenon, traffic signal is normally accompanied by noise and high levels of non-stationarity. Therefore, traffic signal prediction as one of the important subjects of study has attracted researchers’ interests. In this study, a combinatorial approach is proposed for traffic signal...
